The other morning, I heard a dog barking from the street. Through the screen door I could see a beat-up car slowly driving towards our house, a dog running alongside barking wildly. As the car approached, I could see an elderly woman driving, looking straight ahead while blasting energetic classical music out of all four open windows, puttering along slowly, doggy yipping at the tires.
I don't think she was trying to catch the dog, as she didn't even glance out the window at it. And after the second trip down our street, I didn't think she was in need of assistance from this crazy dog chasing her car. Nope, I think she was giving her dog some exercise, because she cruised down our normally quiet street once more doing the same routine.
I think she had the music blasting to drown out the sound of the dog's barking, because it was so extraordinarily loud. And she never once looked at me, standing on my front stoop watching her. I even went and scrounged up some new batteries for the Flip video recorder in hope of documenting the weirdness, but alas! She didn't come back around for a fourth trip.
Just in case, though, I've been keeping the Flip on the desk in the front hall and every time I hear a dog bark I run to the front door. So far, no luck, but maybe elderly dog-exercising music-blaring crazy lady will come back one of these days.
